The Sollazzi (Sollatium Regis) were the hilarious dwellings of the Norman kings of the Arab-Norman period (1100 A.D.) in Sicily and specifically in Palermo in the present historic center.
The Sollazzi are the buildings built by King Frederick and later also used by Roger I and Frederick II who used these palaces as a place to live during the summer periods and where parties and banquets were held after hunting parties made in the surroundings of the Sollazzi themselves, in fact they were surrounded by dense vegetation and animated by innumerable varieties of fauna for game hunting.
The Sollazzi were therefore built within these verdant areas, and the buildings enjoyed a natural coolness given by the rich flora and also by intramural engineering systems that ensured their coolness with systems still valid today for having refrigerated air.
The Sollazzi in Palermo were several and located in the area from Altofonte and Monreale (south of Palermo) to the heart of Palermo i.e. the Royal Palace at what is now Corso Calatafimi. Some of these have remained fairly intact such as La Zisa, La Cuba and Lo Scibene, others have suffered disfigurement due to carelessness over the centuries and are buildings that have undergone substantial structural changes and alterations, these buildings are the Torre Alaino, Altofonte and other
